Mito Kairakuen

Three Greate Gardens of JapanKairakuen

As one of Japan's Three Great Gardens, along with Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa and Korakuen Garden in Okayama, Kairakuen Garden is particularly renowned for its plum blossoms in spring. With 3,000 plum trees of 100 varieties, the garden comes alive with color and fragrance. In early summer, azaleas bloom, followed by bush clover in autumn, providing a stunning backdrop to the vast expanse of Senba Lake.

The garden was created by the ninth lord of Mito Domain, Tokugawa Nariaki, and the Kobuntei teahouse within the grounds exudes the elegance of Mito samurai. A tour of the interior is a delightful experience. The Togyokusen well, located near the front gate, continuously flows with cool, clear water.

Nearby, the Tokiwa Shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Mitsukuni and Tokugawa Nariaki, offering a tranquil atmosphere. The Kodokan, a symbol of Mito learning, is surrounded by a white-washed earthen wall and 100 old plum trees, preserving the ambiance of the past.
